Consonant blends: l, r, and s lists, and the digraph test
Published 2026-10-27 · Updated 2026-10-27

A consonant blend is two or more consonants that sit together, and each one keeps its sound. stop is /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/. st is a blend. ship is not a blend: sh is one sound. The practice guide uses fl, sm, and st as blend examples, and it says to teach each sound in the blend and then blend the sounds, rather than memorizing the pair as a unit.
The classroom list people mean by "the twenty blends" is the two-letter set below. It is a teaching set, not an official count of every cluster in English.
The blend versus digraph test
Say the word and count sounds. If you still hear every letter, it is a blend. If two letters collapse into one sound, it is a digraph.
| Word | Sounds | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| stop | /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/ | st blend |
| flag | /f/ /l/ /a/ /g/ | fl blend |
| ship | /sh/ /i/ /p/ | sh digraph, not a blend |
| chat | /ch/ /a/ /t/ | ch digraph |
| crush | /k/ /r/ /u/ /sh/ | cr blend and sh digraph in one word |
Digraph lists and the ck rule are on digraphs. Do not teach a blend by giving it a nickname that hides the sounds. The child should tap /s/, then /t/, then the vowel.
L-blends, r-blends, and s-blends
Teach one family, then words, then the next family. Phonic Books notes that a child who can blend a three-sound word may stumble when the word has four or more sounds, because those sounds have to stay in memory. Word building, one sound at a time, is the fix, and only after letter sounds are automatic.
L-blends. The second letter is l.
| Blend | Words |
|---|---|
| bl | blot, blip, blab |
| cl | clap, clip, club, clam |
| fl | flag, flat, flip, flop |
| gl | glad |
| pl | plan, plug, plot, plum |
| sl | slap, slip, sled, slam |
gl is a small set at this stage. glad is the clear short-vowel word. glass uses a doubled s, so it can wait.
R-blends. The second letter is r.
| Blend | Words |
|---|---|
| br | brag, brim, brat |
| cr | crab, crop, crib |
| dr | drag, drop, drip, drum |
| fr | frog |
| gr | grab, grin, grip |
| pr | prop, prep |
| tr | trap, trip, trim, trot |
S-blends. The first letter is s. sl is in this family and in the l-blends. Count it once when you plan the week.
| Blend | Words |
|---|---|
| sc | scan, scat |
| sk | skip, skin, skid |
| sl | slap, slip, sled |
| sm | smog, smug |
| sn | snap, snip, snug |
| sp | spot, spin, spit |
| st | stop, step, stem |
| sw | swim, swat, swam |
Three-letter s-blends come after the two-letter set is easy. Each letter still has a sound.
| Blend | Words |
|---|---|
| scr | scrap, scrub |
| spl | split, splat |
| spr | sprig |
| str | strip, strap |
| squ | squid |
squ is /s/ /k/ /w/. It is three sounds before the vowel, which is why it waits.
Words that end with s-blends
A final s-blend is st, sk, or sp at the end of the word. The vowel is still short. These are not initial s-blends.
- st: nest, rest, test, list, fast, last, mist, dust
- sk: mask, desk, ask
- sp: gasp, wasp
ask is vowel-consonant-consonant, no beginning consonant. It is still a final sk blend. sand and hand end in nd, not an s-blend. camp ends in mp. Those are final blends of a different family. Teach them after final st is easy, not in the s-blend week.
A word can have a blend at both ends. blast is bl plus st. Leave those until each side is solid on its own.
Twenty blend words to post
If you need a short set, use these. Each one keeps every consonant sound.
stop, step, flag, clap, slip, snap, spot, swim, skip, crab, drop, grab, trip, frog, drum, nest, mask, desk, plan, grin.
That is a teaching set, not a ranked list. Swap in a word from the tables if a child already knows it.
When to teach s-blends
There is no single age. The practice guide introduces blends after single-letter sounds, on a kindergarten through 3rd grade timeline. Phonic Books is more specific about readiness: three-sound words first, because extra sounds are harder to hold. A child who still cannot blend map should not start on stop. A child who blends map, ship, and hat can start s-blends, whether that is late kindergarten or 1st grade.
Start with st, sp, and sn. The sounds are easy to hear. Then sl and sm. Save scr, spl, spr, str, and squ for last.
One limit: hearing the blend is not the same as reading it. If the child says "sop" for stop, the t was dropped, not the vowel. Go back to tapping /s/ /t/ /o/ /p/ before you add a new blend. More on the three-sound step is on CVC words.
Blend practice sits in the K-2 Decodable Books download: a teacher page per unit and a Start Here guide with the scope and sequence, in a ZIP. Children's reading text uses single-storey a and g, drawn as vector outlines.
What is a blend word example?
stop is a blend word. s and t each keep a sound. ship is not: sh is one sound, a digraph.
What are the consonant blends in a classroom list of twenty?
bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, and sw. sl is both an s-blend and an l-blend. Three-letter s-blends, such as str, come after these.
How many s-blends are there?
The two-letter set is sc, sk, sl, sm, sn, sp, st, and sw. The three-letter set taught next is scr, spl, spr, str, and squ. That is the classroom set, not a law of the language.
What are some words that end with s-blends?
nest, rest, test, list, fast, last, mask, desk, gasp, and wasp. The s-blend is at the end: st, sk, or sp.
What age to target s-blends?
After CVC words are easy to blend. The practice guide places that work in kindergarten and 1st grade. There is no single birthday. More sounds are harder to hold, so s-blends wait until three-sound words are solid.
